Description

The Bixa orellana or Annatto is a tree-like shrub from tropical South America that is known for the yellow to red coloring that is obtained from the seeds of the fruits. This dye is used by Indians to dye their hair and face red. The coloring agent is also used in the dairy industry to color margarine and cheese.
The local population also uses the leaves against a variety of ailments.
It is an easy, fast growing plant. The plant can give the first fruits when it is 18 months. The Annatto grows on almost any soil type and, when the beautiful bright red fruits hang from the tree, it is particularly ornamental.
The seeds we offer are fresh, not dried and vacuum sealed in packages of 50+ grams.
