Description
The Musa acuminata or ‘Red Dacca’ is a variety of banana known for its distinctive reddish-purple skin. This banana is often referred to simply as the “Red Banana.” The fruit is typically shorter and plumper than the common yellow Cavendish bananas and has a sweeter, creamier taste with a hint of raspberry or mango flavor when ripe.
The Red Dacca banana plant is a fast-growing herbaceous plant that can reach heights of 3 to 4 meters. Like other banana plants, it thrives in tropical and subtropical climates, requiring rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7. It prefers warm temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C and high humidity.
This banana variety is popular in both fresh consumption and culinary uses, such as in desserts, smoothies, or baking. It is also rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C and beta-carotene, making it a nutritious choice. The Red Dacca banana is commercially grown in various regions, including Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and parts of Africa. Its unique color and flavor make it a sought-after variety in specialty markets.
Small banana plants in the tropics produce their first fruits in 9 months.
