Description
The vanilla orchid, Vanilla planifolia, is the plant species responsible for producing vanilla beans, which are used to make vanilla flavoring. It is a tropical climbing vine native to Mexico and parts of Central America. The orchid has long, fleshy, green leaves and produces beautiful pale greenish-yellow flowers that bloom for only one day.
The plant thrives in warm, humid environments and requires well-draining soil with a pH range of 6 to 7.5. The plant likes shadow, not full sun.
Vanilla cultivation is labor-intensive, as the flowers need to be hand-pollinated to produce the vanilla pods. These pods undergo a lengthy curing process to develop their characteristic flavor.
Our cuttings have at least 6 buds so that you have a nice head start and the plant can grow well.
We offer 2 varieties. The green leafed variant and the Variegated, with green/yellow striped leaves.
