Description
The Musa balbisiana, also known as the Wild Banana or Plantain, is a wild banana variety that provides seeds. The balbisiana is mainly ornamental, because of its stately shape and the beautiful flowers that this banana has. This banana is sweet, but not often eaten due to the competition of better edible varieties without seeds.
The minimum temperature for this plant is between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius. Although the plant can die, it grows back from the roots. The Musa balbisiana does not have high demands on the soil composition, but the soil must be well-drained.
You can keep this Plantain in a container and bring it inside during the cold period. The advantage of a container plant is that the plant does not get too tall.
In the open ground and (sub) tropical conditions, the plant grows easily above 3 meters.
Do not harvest this banana too early, because it will ripen poorly.
